Beast from the East — UK winter cold snap drives 16% gas demand spike

A late-February 2018 cold snap (the "Beast from the East") drove UK domestic gas consumption up 16% in Q1 2018 vs Q1 2017. National Grid Gas issued a Gas Deficit Warning on 1 March 2018 — the first since 2012 — as demand stress-tested storage and import capacity.
